John Silva salutes ‘caregiver,’ wife

World Stroke Day is Wednesday, and former ISSM/ISSO John Silva is sharing his story of survival in a national forum.

The American Heart Association enlisted Silva to write a column, and the AARP published his column. With those two groups behind Silva, he is going to reach a lot of people.

Silva, 66, offers a loving salute to his wife, JoAn, who has been his caregiver as he fought his way back from the 2005 stroke that affected his speech. He writes: "JoAn has been the best friend I've ever had. She celebrated all my big accomplishments and the little ones as well. She has stood by me in my bleakest hour and has helped me regain my life. She knew when to push me and when not to. The thing I'll always remember is her love and her belief that I would get better. It's hard to forget things like that."

He also has thanked Orlando for its support during his recovery.

"The outpouring of concern was like a big Orlando hug," Silva told the Sentinel in February. "I was busy just trying to get better."
His motto: "I didn't plan on having this. I always say these are the cards I've been dealt. Let's play cards." He keeps playing, cheerfully and frankly.

Silva continues to do "Positive John" features that aired on Tuesdays and Fridays. He sees those uplifting stories as "a break from just run-to-the-hills bad news" and says he wants to tell "stories that make you have faith in the world at it’s people."
