Love, Despair, and Our Capacity and Capability for Change

Love, Despair, and Our Capacity and Capability for Change “We can change. People say we can’t, but we do when the stakes or the pain is high enough. And when we do, life can change. It offers more of itself when we agree to give up our busyness.” You may have heard someone breakdown fear as an acronym: False Evidence Appearing Real. It applies to this point because some people think that they regret their break-up because of the relationship — but really, it's more about being scared to start over. Better to Have Loved and Lost Than Never Have Loved at All?

...Better to Have Loved and Lost Than Never Have Loved at All? Was Tennyson right about love and loss? In my 10 years of blogging here at Blogger, one of the most popular posts I ever wrote was, “Is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?” That was in 2008. Was Tennyson correct? To answer the question posed by the poet Tennyson, I looked at just one very narrow way of thinking about love — romantic love, using the institution of marriage as an imperfect measure of it. As I noted at the time, I have never ascribed to such a limited understanding of love, and as a poetry scholar noted in the comments section, that’s not what Tennyson had in mind either. Poetry aside, the question I addressed is this: If you stay single all your life, are you better off or worse off than if you marry, but then get divorced or become widowed? In my original blog post (below), I said that lifelong single people were typically better off than divorced or widowed people in the ki

Cheated on My Husband With our Kid's Daycare Aide & Have Zero Regrets

... Cheated on My Husband With our Kid's Daycare Aide & Have Zero Regrets I began to sadly accept that this was my new nonsexual state of being. And then I met Jack. He was an aide at our child's day care, fresh out of grad school and extremely attractive. The moms would all comment on his very excellent physique and make fun of his overly groomed appearance, but the truth is we were all swooning. One morning after school drop-off, I went home and took out my vibrator, which I was surprised had working batteries since the last time I had used it was before getting pregnant. Thinking about Jack, I came so easily. It made me feel simultaneously ecstatic and guilty. I was thrilled that I could actually get myself off, when I hadn't wanted to for ages. And I also felt terrible that it wasn't my own husband that I was picturing. This became my new "me time" routine, and my fantasies got very detailed. Then, one afternoon, I was strolling through a d

In mid-August, falconers begin training their birds in the desert Falconry: An ancient tradition that is still flying high The Art of Falconry’ is an exquisite book written by Patrick Morel, an eminent master falconer, renowned worldwide. With the help of enthusiastic colleagues, he succeeded in having the UNESCO declare falconry a living cultural heritage. “Falconry, like food, music, literature and art, has its own unique culture which is part of our wider culture. Hawking is one of the only recreational activities that has survived today almost unchanged since the dawn of time; it has preser.ved its language, its gestures and its values and, consequently, has a special place in our cultural heritage,” explains Patrick Morel. Falconry remains popular among Saudis who seek to revive an aspect of their Bedouin history. Falconry is practiced with passion and joy as it remains an important aspect of the region’s cultural heritage. Falconry in the Kingdom has changed the least fro
